King Size Beds

A UK king size bed is 5ft wide and 6ft 6in long (150 x 200cm) and takes a 5ft king size mattress. King size beds are popular with couples who want more personal space. Choose from ottoman, divan, wooden, metal and fabric bed frames.

How big is a king size bed?

King size beds measure 5ft (150cm) wide and 6ft 6in long (200cm), offering more room than a double bed. Upgrade to a super king for added luxury with an extra foot of width. When measuring for a king bed, take into account the entire bed frame as some designs may be larger.

Compared to a double (4 feet 6 inches or 135cm wide and 6 feet 3 inches long), you’ll notice quite a dramatic difference in sleeping space.

How big should a bedroom be to comfortably fit a king size bed?

Before making a purchase for a king size bed frame, it is crucial to evaluate whether your bedroom has adequate space to accommodate it along with all other bedroom furniture pieces. It's essential to keep in mind that the standard dimensions of a king bed do not encompass all aspects of bed frames that might be part of the bed you want. Some bed frames, such as scroll bed frames, come with grand headboards and footboards, thereby increasing the overall size of the bed frame.

As a rough guideline, a bedroom measuring 400cm in width and length is suitable for a king size bed frame and all other associated furniture pieces. However, it's important to note that certain types of bed frames might require extra space. For instance, divan bed frames with side drawers need space on the side where the drawer is to be able to pull it out fully. On the other hand, an ottoman bed frame doesn't require this consideration as the storage compartment is located upward, saving floor space.

So, when looking to purchase a king size bed frame, it's vital to take into account all factors to ensure a comfortable and practical fit in your bedroom.

What are the benefits of a king size bed?

Choosing a king size bed frame means opting for luxury with its ample width. Popular among couples who value personal space, a king size bed provides room for both partners to sleep comfortably without affecting each other's positions.

In addition to width, king size beds also offer extra length. While single, small double, and double beds are 6ft 3in, a king size bed adds an additional 3 inches, making it ideal for taller individuals. Don't overlook the benefits of length when selecting a king size bed.

Will a king size bed fit my room?

As a rough guide, a bedroom measuring 400cm in width and length suits a king size bed frame and the other furniture in the room. Allow extra space for frames with large headboards or footboards, and for divan drawers, which need room at the side to pull out fully. For more on room sizes, read our guide to UK bedroom sizes.

Is the bed frame bigger than the mattress?

It can be. A king size frame is made for a 5ft (150 x 200cm) mattress, but the outside of the frame depends on its design, such as the headboard and footboard. Check the size specifications on each product page before you buy.

King vs super king

A super king is 6ft (180cm) wide and 6ft 6in (200cm) long. That makes it one foot (30cm) wider than a king, with the same length. If you want more width and your room allows it, see our super king size beds.

Double vs king

A UK double is 4ft 6 (135cm) wide and 6ft 3in (190cm) long. A king is 5ft (150cm) wide, so it is 6 inches (15cm) wider than a double. If your room is tight for a king, compare our 4ft 6 double beds.
