Small Double Beds

A UK small double bed is 4ft wide and 6ft 3in long (120 x 190cm) and takes a 4ft small double mattress. It suits a smaller bedroom, or couples who do not need a lot of sleeping space. Choose from divan, ottoman, sleigh, wooden, fabric and metal small double bed frames.

What is the size of a small double bed?

A small double bed is 4 feet wide (48 inches or 120 cm) and 6 feet 3 inches long (75 inches or 190 cm). They are ideal for individuals who have limited space in their bedroom and are seeking a compact and comfortable sleeping solution, or for couples who do not require a lot of sleeping space.

Small double bed frames also provide more options compared to single beds. With more room for storage options, small double beds can be a great space saving solution.

Can you fit 2 people in a small double bed?

A 4ft small double bed can accommodate two adults, though it can feel cramped. It is 6 inches narrower than a double bed, reducing the sleeping space. However, the advantage of a small double bed is that it frees up more floor space, potentially allowing for additional storage or a spot for your morning exercise routine.

For a comfortable sleeping arrangement for couples, a double bed is recommended. However, if space is limited, a queen size bed can still provide comfort and restful sleep.

What are the different types of small double beds?

Divan Bases

Opting for a small double bed means you want to maximise space without sacrificing comfort. A small double divan base is a great choice as it often features built-in storage drawers. This allows you to store items such as extra clothing, bed linens, and more, while keeping your room clutter-free. When selecting a small double divan bed, be mindful of the width of the drawers when making measurements.

Ottomans

Just like a divan base, a small double ottoman bed provides ample space-saving benefits. The use of gas-lift technology makes lifting the mattress effortless, revealing ample storage underneath the bed. This type of ¾ bed with storage is perfect for compact bedrooms as it does not require additional space for opening drawers

Sleigh

Sleigh (or sometimes referred to as 'scroll beds') are a fantastic way to inject some character into your bedroom. They typically have tall curved headboards and footboards making for a true showstopper when it comes to bedroom design and decor.

Wooden

A small double wooden bed frame can impart a cozy, French chateau feel to your bedroom. These beds are budget-friendly due to the cost-effective materials used. If you desire a more sophisticated look at an economical price, a painted queen-size bed frame can add a touch of elegance to your space.

Upholstered

Bring sophistication and class to smaller spaces with a fabric small double bed frame. Our fabric bed frames come in a variety of styles, types of fabrics, and colours to help you find the right bed frame for you.

Metal

A 4ft metal bed frame is an affordable option, ideal for a guest bed or budget-friendly move. Metal is versatile and comes in a variety of colors like black, white, and pink. If you desire a modern, sleek look or a touch of whimsy, metal beds are a great choice and have durability.

Will a small double bed fit my room?

Measure your room and allow for the whole bed frame, not just the mattress. Headboards and footboards add to the overall size, and divan drawers need room at the side to pull out fully. For more on room sizes, read our guide to UK bedroom sizes.

Is the bed frame bigger than the mattress?

It can be. A small double frame is made for a 4ft (120 x 190cm) mattress, but the outside of the frame depends on its design, such as the headboard and footboard. Check the size specifications on each product page before you buy.

Small double vs single

A single is 3ft (90cm) wide and the same 6ft 3in (190cm) long, so a small double is one foot (30cm) wider. For a smaller room, see our 3ft single beds.

Small double vs double

A UK double is 4ft 6 (135cm) wide and the same 6ft 3in (190cm) long, so it is 6 inches (15cm) wider than a small double.
